On Natural Genetic Engineering: Structural Dynamism in Random Boolean Networks
نویسنده
چکیده
This short paper presents an abstract, tunable model of genomic structural change with in the cell lifecycle and explores its use with simulated evolution. A well-known Boolean model of genetic regulatory networks is extended to include changes in node connectivity based upon the current cell state, e.g., via transposable elements. The underlying behaviour of the resulting dynamical networks is investigated before their evolvability is explored using a version of the NK model of fitness landscapes. Structural dynamis m is found to be selected for in non-stationary environments and subsequently shown capable of providing a mechanism for evolutionary innovation when such reorganizations are inherited.

متن کاملOn Mobile DNA in Artificial Regulatory Networks: Evolving Functional and Structural Dynamism
There is a growing body of work considering the use of representations based upon genetic regulatory networks. This paper uses a recently presented abstract, tunable Boolean regulatory network model to explore aspects of mobile DNA, such as transposons, within these dynamical systems. The significant role of mobile DNA in the evolution of natural systems is becoming increasingly clear. Whilst o...
متن کاملLarge-scale Topology Optimization Using Parameterized Boolean Networks
A novel parameterization concept for structural truss topology optimization is presented in this article that enables the use of evolutionary algorithms in design of large-scale structures. The representational power of Boolean networks is used here to parameterize truss topology. A genetic algorithm then operates on parameters that govern the generation of truss topologies using this random ne...
متن کاملThe Modular Structure of Kauffman Networks
This is the second paper of a series of two about the structural properties that influence the asymptotic dynamics of Random Boolean Networks. Here we study the functionally independent clusters in which the relevant elements, introduced and studied in our first paper [3], are subdivided. We show that the phase transition in Random Boolean Networks can also be described as a percolation transit...
متن کاملSummary I- Modelling Genetic Networks using Boolean Networks
Random Boolean networks (RBN) were first used by Stuart. A. Kauffman [6] more than thirthy years ago as a tool for studying the dynamics of complex natural systems. Classical methods of analysis relying on partial differential equations and continuous dynamics are often inadequate for modelling the behavior of large systems. Instead, simulations of idealized computer models, known as discrete d...
